Danah stared at the tiny star her mother had so precariously sewn onto her vest. It gleamed against the black, even though it was nothing but yellow felt. The small star had more significance now than it had ever had before, even though it was supposed to be some kind of sacred symbol. But seven year old eyes dont differentiate insignias so well. That could have been why both the star, and that funny black spider symbol both looked the same to her, though both meant something completely different. She remembered her mommy saying that the spider was bad, and refusing to hang it from their window when the man in the funny hat had come to make sure their family was "respecting authority" or whatever it was that he had called it. She hadnt had to wear her star then, and the man in the funny hat had been nicer then.
The doorbell ran, filling the house with some ominous sound, though no one could really tell Danah why. To her, it just seemed that every time the doorbell rang, mean men wearing spider symbols on their arms came and did something to her family. They changed things, and made Mommy and Daddy scared, and angry so their faces reddened like strawberries, and they shut themselves behind locked doors to sob out of Danah's veiw.
She ran to living room as Mommy opened the door. She opened it slowly though, trying to avoid the inevitable as long as possible. Behind the frame, the sun fell down upon a clean cut soldier, bathing him in glorious light, masquerading him as an angel from heaven, instead of a demon.
His German voice chomped away at the peaceful silence, and Danah's star seemed to pound on her shirt, as if the inanament object were trying to warn her of something.
"Pack your bags" he said.
"You have one hour" he said.
"You are going away" he said.
She held onto her star now, even though she didnt really understand what it meant, or how it's significance on her shirt had branded her for the rest of her life. But she needed comfort as her Mommy fell to her knees in front of the soldier. He slapped her hard with his palm, the sound echoing through Danah's ears like a siren, and plummeting down into her heart, making it beat faster, and faster.
The soldier, with no regards to the woman crumpled at his feet in pain, asked how old the little girl was.
Seven years old.
Seven years old meant her own special shower.
(Alright Mrs. Dunigan! I cant get second period out of my mind! This is the result!)

Wow! The ending was absolutely horrific and yet, extremely powerful! The last line, about how her age would determine life or death in the gas chambers was like hitting the nail on the head. Painfully true. I love that you were able to create this as a result of the (I'm assuming uneducated comments that we heard). Although those comments make me so mad, they also make me realize how incredibly important it is to continue to study history and our past, else as the famous quote goes we are doomed to repeat it. Thank you for sharing.
gee thanks. It's something that i wish the other people in second period would think about. because it seems like they dont tie in the holocaust with real people because it was in the past. They dont take into the consideration the little kids who had to go through it, and the kids their age.
